‘I am a child of freedom. Thank you Mr. Veteran.’

June 5, 2012 by veteransroadtrip

Watching the Jubilee celebrations in London reminds me of the last time I saw crowds out to welcome a procession of visiting British dignitaries! Then, however, the crowds were Dutch and they were out in force to welcome 160 World War II veterans in a convoy of London Black Cabs in Holland. Frans Ammerlaan from the Market Garden Foundation of The Netherlands recently sent me this collection of photographs which wonderfully capture some of the events: crowds of Dutch people welcoming […]

Guest post: Dickie Hudd, Honorary Chairman, on his memories and a song

June 4, 2012 by veteransroadtrip

This week, I asked Dickie Hudd, Honorary Chairman of the London Taxi Benevolent Association for the War Disabled, pictured here with comedian Al Murray at the send-off from the Union Jack Club Club in London, to send me some of his thoughts and memories from the trip. My mind’s been filled with so many thoughts, memories and pictures: the smiles, the children, the sheer number of people who turned out to greet us, the warmth, the affection and the kindness […]

A short film for Al Murray, featuring James Baker, 89

May 27, 2012 by veteransroadtrip

Comedian Al Murray was very supportive of the trip to Holland, coming to the send-off at the Union Jack Club and tweeting his 150K followers about the trip, all to the great delight of the veterans and the charity. I shared a cab, driven by lovely cabbie Jim, on the way to Holland with John Evans, 87, and James Baker, 89, who turned out to be a great fan of Mr. Murray. On the way back from Holland, I interviewed […]

Dick Goodwin, Honorary Vice-President of the taxi charity, has just received this message from Joanna Lumley, who has always been very supportive of the charity. Thanks Joanna! *************************************************************************************** My dear Dick, You are so marvellous to have done this fine thing. Guest post: Dick Goodwin’s personal highlights

May 20, 2012 by veteransroadtrip

Dick Goodwin, Honorary Vice-President of the London Taxi Benevolent Association for the War Disabled, has written this overview of the trip, where he talks about the one memory that will stay with him forever…. Well, we’ve been back from The Netherlands now for about two weeks. The dust has settled and hopefully everyone has had a chance to relax after what was a tremendous five days and an event that surpassed all expectations.  Our veterans were treated as visiting royalty, […]

Danny and Ernie arrive in Oosterbeek

May 15, 2012 by veteransroadtrip

A little film made in the back of a Black Cab. I was in Julian Lillington’s cab with veterans Danny McCrudden and Ernie Davis when we arrived to a wonderful reception at the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek on 5th May 2012. Danny was talking about his somewhat disappointing return home to Glasgow after the war when we started seeing the crowds. My friend and photographer Matt is also in the cab. Connie Batemen and Eric Davis pop up at the […]
